Monument Valley girls win SENAI Tournament

The Monument Valley Cougars girls basketball team won the Hawk bracket of the Striking Eagle Native American Invitational (SENAI) to end 2023.
The Cougars went 3-0 at the largest annual Native American high school basketball tournaments in the country with over 50 teams participating in the tournament in Albuquerque December 28-30.
The Monument Valley girl’s team opened the tournament defeating Cuba 54 to 50.
The Cougars were led in scoring by Nevaeh Wilson who scored 16 points in the contest, Mariah Begaye and Shikeeya Hudson each had 10 points. Shimequa Hudson scored (9), Kaylisa Tome (5) and Precious Bedonie (4).
In their next game the girls defeated Cleveland JV 62-28.
Once again Wilson led scorers with 25 points, Bedonie and Shimequa Hudson each scored 10. Begaye scored (8), Tome (4). Shikeeya Hudson (3) and Shilah Williams (2).
The win placed Monument Valley in the championship game against 3A Santa Fe Indian School. The Cougars once again took care of business earning a 51-39 victory.
Shikeeya Hudson led Monument Valley in the game scoring 18 points while Wilson scored (14), Bedonie (8), Shimequa Hudson (7). Tome and Begaye each scored two points.
The Cougar girls now hold an 8-1 varsity record and are the #1 ranked team in Utah’s 1A. They travel to take on #2 ranked Wendover on January 5. and St Joseph on January 6.
The MVHS boys basketball team earned 6th place in the Bear Bracket at SENAI.
The boys were defeated by Pine Hill 53-47 in the first game. The Cougars then defeated Northwest 70-34 before falling to Jemez Valley 52-44 in the final game.
