Raiders open 2021-22 season at Shiprock Chieftain Invitational

The Whitehorse Raiders boys basketball team opened their season at a tournament in Shiprock on December 2,3, and 4. The Raiders opened the year with one win and two losses.

The Raiders won their first game of the season 79-23 over Shiprock Northwest. D’Wayne Nakai led the way for the Raiders scoring 23 points including six three-point baskets.

Weston Manygoats scored 16 points, while Brett James added 15.

Lyric Phillips had eight for the Raiders while Robert Charley and Keeyaah Begay each had six points. Tyrell Benally added five for the Raiders.

On Friday the Raiders lost a one-point nailbiter to tournament host Shiprock High by a final score of 52-51.

The Raiders trailed 28-23 at halftime and clawed their way back, outscoring the Chieftains in the second half. But they were unable to finish off Shiprock in the final frame.

Nakai stayed hot from three making five shots from beyond the arc and adding another field goal. Nakai scored 17 in the game.

Benally, James, and Begay each had eight points on the game, while Phillips had four.

Manygoats, Charley, and Nicolas Howell all had two points apiece.

On Saturday the Raiders fell to the Escalante Lobos out of New Mexico by a final score of 58-47.

In this game, Brett James led the way with 17 points for the Raiders. Nakai had 14, while Howell had six points.

Benally hit a three, while Manygoats had two points and Begay had one.

The Raiders played Navajo Pine Tuesday evening after our press deadline.

This Friday and Saturday they’ll be in Richfield for the 1A Preview. The boys tip off at 2:30 p.m. against Tabiona on Friday and against Valley at 12 p.m. on Saturday.

Both games will be broadcast on Redrock 92.7 FM and PictureItPalmer.com.
