Raiders sweep Battle of the Drum over Monument Valley

The Whitehorse Raiders swept the Battle of the Drum over rivals Monument Valley on January 7 in Monument Valley.
The girls teams saw a game that was close through three quarters. The two teams were tied 10-10 after one quarter with Whitehorse taking a 30-28 halftime lead. After three quarters Whitehorse led 53-40 with the Raiders taking a huge lead in the final frame and earning a 71-44 win.
Whitehorse was led by Keiarra Martin who finished with 28 points, while Hannah Clark scored 19 and Maria Yellowman scored 18 points. Lakyara Begay scored four while Malia Sam had two.
Monument Valley was led by Dakotah Cly who finished with 17 points, while Nesbah Hunt scored 13. Ayainna Cly, LeighAn Atene and Malaya Blackmountain scored four points while Taylor Stanley scored two.
In other statistics Whitehorse’s Sam led the team with seven rebounds while Martin and Yellowman each had five. Martin led the team with seven assists while Clark had five. Clark also led the team with four steals and Begay recorded one block in the win.
In the boys game the Raiders jumped to a 19-5 lead over the Cougars and pushed the lead 37-14 at halftime. The score was 51-33 after three quarters with the final score favoring Whitehorse 80-44.
Whitehorse was led in scoring by Adam Joe who had 18 points, while Hyatt Thomas scored 14 and Gourdin Dee scored nine.
Tyrell Black scored eight, and Elam Etsitty had seven. Five Raiders scored four points including Rylan Hamm, Alexander Thompson, Dillon Leo, Tristan Black and Aiden Hamm. Brayden John and Lysyle Phillips scored two.
Jake Deswood led Monument Valley with 18 points, while Tarkale Tsosie had eight and Akcheta Shortman had seven. Riley Stanley scored six, Caleb Cly had four and Alexander Hicks scored one.
Tsosie also led the team with eight rebounds, while Shortman had six. Deswood, Tsosie and Caleb Cly each had three assists, while Riley Stanley recorded five steals.
The Raiders also hosted Green River on January 9. Whitehorse earned a 83-7 win over the pirates in the girls contest.
Martin scored 38 points in the game, while Yellowman had 13 and Clark scored seven.
Mateja Joe scored six, while Laylah Benally and Lakyara Begay had four points. Shylann Hamm and Malia Sam both scored three, Kelaigha Nakai and Gabrielle Whitehorse scored two while Kaleigh Chee scored one.
Yellowman led the team with five rebounds, while Clark had seven assists, and Martin recorded a rare double-double with 10 steals.
The Whitehorse boys meanwhile suffered a 87-52 loss to Green River.
Thompson and Adam Joe each scored nine points, while Aiden Hamm had seven.
Hyatt Thomas and Tristan Black each scored six points while Elam Etsitty had five.
Five Raiders scored two points including Lysyle Phillips, Nateo Sam, Dillon Leo, Taylor Black and Caiden Lansing.
Monument Valley’s next game was played on Tuesday January 13 in Monticello after the San Juan Record Print Deadline.
The Raiders next game is also against Monticello and will be Friday January 16 in Montezuma Creek.
