Regular season is in the books for Monticello wrestlers as team prepares for Divisions and State

The Monticello Buckaroo Wrestlers closed out their regular season with their annual Senior Night Tournament at home January 17 followed by a trip to Aztec, NM for the ten-team Aztec Duals January 20.
At Aztec the Buckaroos finished third in their pool, defeating Shiprock 42-18 and Kirtland 43-24 in duals and falling to Piedra Vista and Aztec. They defeated Bayfield in the final round 42-33.
John Leber and Zac Thayn led the way for Monticello with each going 3-1 at the tournament. Landon Shumway had two wins and one loss. All three Buckaroos earned all of their wins by fall.
Thayn led the Buckaroos with the most pins in the least time, pinning three opponents in 4:14. He also earned the team’s fastest fall at 1:05.
Arturo Gutierrez ended the day at 3-2 with two wins by fall and an 11-3 major decision win. Ronnie Harris and Tavon Black each finished the tournament at 2-2 earning all wins by fall.
Caleb Coleman and Jarum Robison each earned a win by fall on the day. Chandler Henderson and Camren Carpenter also wrestled hard for the Buckaroos.
In the JV tournament, Anson Kendrick earned two wins by fall to finish fifth. Cruise Shumway also wrestled hard for the Buckaroos.
On Wednesday night the Buckaroos welcomed teams from San Juan, Whitehorse, Monument Valley, Dolores, and Grand County to their annual Senior Night Tournament.
Four seniors, Caleb Coleman, Chandler Henderson, Thomas Fullmer, and Zac Thayn along with team manager Madi Snyder were honored prior to the match with their parents.
The Buckaroos were perfect against Dolores, with John Leber earning a win by technical fall over Kenji Edwards. Landon Shumway and Thomas Fullmer each earned wins by fall over Nathan Hill and Jacob Stepp.
And Ronnie Harris earned a 20-10 major decision win over River Wickstrom. Arturo Gutierrez was the only Buckaroo to take on a Grand County opponent, defeating Jonathan Leal by fall.
Against Monument Valley, Landon Shumway earned a win by technical fall 15-0 over Jerious Clark. Caleb Coleman earned a Buckaroo win over Jace Tsosie by fall.
Chandler Henderson earned a win by fall over DeVonte Thinn and Zac Thayn defeated Jace Tsosie by fall. Cruise Shumway was defeated by Shayden Fatt by fall.
Against San Juan, Chandler Henderson defeated Chance Laws by fall. Thomas Fullmer was defeated by JD Palmer and Jarum Robison was defeated by Jared Burke, both by fall. Tavon Black was defeated by Trace Bennett in a 10-3 decision.
Against Whitehorse, Buckaroo Zac Thayn defeated Landin Clark by fall and Jarum Robison defeated Kyle Todechene by fall. Caleb Coleman was defeated 8-4 by Landin Clark.
This week the team travels to Telos Academy in Orem for the Divisional Tournament on Saturday, January 27. The 1A Utah State Tournament is coming up February 9-10 at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield.
