San Juan boys cross country team earns runners-up honors at state meet, girls place third
The San Juan cross country boys ran as an impressive pack to finish as runners-up, while the Lady Broncos earned a third place team finish.
The San Juan Broncos cross country team finished 2nd at the state meet with a score of 51 the boys were just two points behind Grand County and well ahead of third place North Sevier who had a 137 score.
Leading the way for San Juan was Cannon Kartchner who finished in 5th place in the 5k race with a time of 16:32. Kartchner ran his first mile in a time of 5:31, second in a time of 5:37, and final in a time of 5:23.
San Juan's remaining scoring runners ran in an incredible pack with runners two through five finishing one after the other to round out scoring.
Platte Lyman led that group with a 10th place finish in a time of 16:50, Jeraden Hurst was 11th in a time of 16:53, Peter Lyman was 12th with a time of 16:56, and Keegan McCullough was 13th with a time of 17:03.
The 30 second spread for the top five runners was the best by a long shot.
Also running well were the sixth and seventh runners with Jack Kartchner placing 16th in a time of 17:22 and James Gosney placing 23rd in a time of 17:45.
The 1:13 spread for the top seven runners for San Juan was also the best at the state meet.
On the girls side Sincere Nez ran a personal record 19:11 to finish in the top three at the state meet. Nez’s splits had her first mile run in 6:05, her second in a time of 6:35 and her final mile in a time of 6:25.
Nez’s efforts helped push the team to a 3rd place finish with a score of 145 behind North Summit and Grand and 13 points ahead of fourth place Parowan.
Fellow senior Ada Lyman finished in 28th place in a time of 22:41, while Ava Duke was 30th in a time of 22:46. Brooklyn Pincock finished 40th in a time of 23:22 and Harmony Oshley was 60th in a time of 24:44 to round out the five scorers for the Broncos.
Also running for San Juan were Braylyn Eddie (64th time of 25:08) and Sariah Sweeten (76th time of 26:01).
