San Juan boys open week with win, close with a couple of losses

The San Juan High School boys basketball team had one last shot at earning a home game in the second round of the upcoming 2A state tournament.
They needed an upset against either Enterprise or South Sevier this past weekend to earn that benefit. Unfortunately for the Broncos it was not to be.
San Juan was flat all weekend long on their trip west, suffering a 66-54 loss to the #1 Wolves on Friday, February 3 and a 70-48 loss to the #3 Rams on Saturday, February 4.
The Broncos never threatened in either game although they fought hard and played as a team through the final buzzer both nights.
Senior Collin Baker, who has been coming on strong and playing with passion for San Juan these past couple weeks, led team scoring against Enterprise with 16 points.
Junior RJ Dalley hit three three-pointers and scored 13 for the Broncos in the loss. Junior Anthony Done and freshman Jagger Nieves scored six points apiece.
Seniors Ian Johnson and Garrett Young both got five apiece, and senior Dakota Long rounded out the scoring with three points. Johnson, Long, and Young also scored a three-pointer each in the game.
Done led the team with seven rebounds in Enterprise including five on the offensive side. Johnson pulled down five boards in the loss and Baker got four. Done was credited with five assists.
On the way back to San Juan County on Saturday, February 4 the Broncos made a stop in Monroe to take on the Rams of South Sevier.
Until the Rams’ loss to Kanab a couple nights before, South Sevier had been ranked second in the state in 2A boys basketball, but they were #3 when the Broncos met them this past weekend.
Still, San Juan was unable to muster a challenge for the Rams and were outscored in every quarter on the way to the loss.
Young led Bronco scoring with 12 points, including two three-point buckets. Johnson drained three treys and scored 11 points.
Dalley scored two threes and was third in scoring with eight. Done scored six, Baker poured in five, Jake Ivins contributed four, and Nieves got a couple.
Earlier in the week, on Wednesday, February 1, San Juan did pick up a big Region 19 win over Parowan in a 61-58 final. The Rams led by a couple after one quarter but the Broncos took command in the second quarter.
Parowan made it interesting with a 24-point fourth quarter, but San Juan held off the rally with good foul shooting for the win.
RJ Dally had an impressive game, hitting five threes to lead the Broncos with 15 points. Done scored 13 in the win, Baker had 11, and Young got eight.
Johnson and Nieves both scored six points for San Juan and Jake Ivins rounded out the scoring with two points. Johnson hit two three-pointers on the night.
Baker led the team with seven rebounds, Nieves and Done pulled down five apiece, and Keaton Ivins and Young collected four each. Done had five assists in the win.
Following the busy week San Juan remains in ninth place in the 2A RPI standings with seven wins and 15 losses. They are the final team in line for a first-round bye in the state tournament.
Right now it’s likely they’ll face #8 Parowan for the third time this season on the road in the second round. That’s some RPI silliness since the Broncos have already beaten Parowan twice this year.
But they’ll have to take care of business in their final game of the regular season this Friday, February 10 in Beaver to ensure that matchup.
