The San Juan High School boys soccer team is still looking for their first win of the 2022 season, but they’ve been battling hard and improving steadily, according to fifth-year head coach Jay Jones.
The Broncos are 0-9 on the season but came very close to that elusive first win on two occasions in the past couple weeks. They lost a one-goal contest to Diamond Ranch in Hurricane 3-2 on April 8.
Less than a week later the Diamondbacks visited Blanding with San Juan losing a double-overtime heartbreaker 5-4.
Senior Spencer Jensen leads the Broncos in scoring so far with four goals. Senior Austin Pemberton has two. Juniors Dakota Long and Shawn Black have scored one goal apiece this season.
Three Broncos have shared the goaltending duties. Senior Lennon Done leads the way with an impressive 88 saves in seven games – an average of almost 13 saves per game.
Sophomore Tobias Ward has 12 saves in six games and sophomore Jordan Duke has seven saves in five appearances.
Coach Jones says his team has made many improvements since last season and continues to do so. “We are doing better keeping possession and communicating much better than previous years,” he explained.
“We still need to work on our ball control, confidence, and shooting,” Jones continued. “We have a great group of athletes on our team and we are continually working to improve.
“I am proud of their perseverance. Though they haven’t won yet they still work hard and understand that we are building our team. Greatness comes from hard work,” he concluded.
San Juan will complete their regular season over the course of the next week with five games in just eight days. They hosted the 2A #8 Millard Eagles on Tuesday, April 19, too late for the press deadline.
They’ll play on the road Thursday and Friday, April 21-22, at #10 Parowan and #2 Gunnison Valley. The final games of the season are in Blanding Monday and Tuesday, April 25-26 against #15 South Sevier and #13 Beaver.
