The San Juan High School boys soccer team got one of the biggest wins in their six-year varsity history, if not the biggest when they upset the undefeated Gunnison Valley Bulldogs 4-3 on Thursday, March 21 in Gunnison.
The Broncos scored two goals in the first half and two more in the second to hold off a Gunnison Valley rally for their sixth win in program history.
Prior to the win on Thursday San Juan was 0-4 against the Bulldogs over the past two seasons. Gunnison Valley was 4-0 coming into the game, was leading the 2A South, and had outscored their opponents 16-3 on the season.
Jace Walker scored two goals in the win for San Juan, Parker Sopena scored one, and Cole Duke scored one. Goalkeeper Javin Montella made an astounding 25 saves.
The past week began on a bit of a lower note with a 5-0 loss at Millard and through the first four games of the season the Broncos are now 1-3 overall and in region play.
They’re hoping the win over Gunnison Valley will provide some strong momentum this week that will continue through the remainder of the season.
San Juan hosted 2-3 Beaver on Tuesday, March 26 after the San Juan Record print deadline. They’ll stay at home to take on the Parowan on Saturday, March 30. The Rams were 0-6 at the beginning of the week.
