San Juan boys tennis gears up for postseason

Despite the fact that the spring sports season is seven weeks along at San Juan High School, the boys tennis team has only managed to get three meets under their belt.
Third-year Broncos Head Coach Casey Olsen reports the meet shortage has been caused in part by weather issues and other factors. But he also reports that the season is going well to this point.
Olsen provided a summary of the team’s progress this week in an email to the San Juan Record. Since nobody can summarize a season better than a coach or player, we’re excited to present his comments here.
“Shortage of meets aside, it has been a lot of fun to see our guys play, and to see the progress they have made.
“Noah Olsen improved so much between last season and this season, which is awesome to see. He works hard for it and he plays hard.
“Wyatt Keith is playing second singles this year and he is a lot of fun to watch. Spencer Gosney is playing third singles and he is a lot of fun to watch because he always seems to be able to lighten the mood when needed.
“Our doubles teams have changed a few times due to scheduling conflicts and injuries. One of the most exciting things this year is that we had two seniors join the team for the first time.
“They decided to try it out for fun and it has been great to have them. They are very positive and they are a good example to the underclassmen.
“We played Wasatch Academy on March 25. All three of our varsity singles players won their matches. Our first doubles team lost, and our second doubles team won by default.
On March 31 we played at South Sevier. We did win any matches that day, but our singles were pretty evenly matched with theirs, so it made for some hard-fought battles and the matches were intense.
“On April 8 we played in Gunnison. the singles matches were intense and a lot of fun to watch. Wyatt Keith ended up losing his second singles match but for a while he was unstoppable at the net and it was very exciting to watch. Our first doubles team won that day too.”
The Broncos are looking to get some key experience and as much time as they can on the court leading up to the postseason, which is only one week away.
The team will have that opportunity with a number of matches set to close out this final week of the regular season. First, on Thursday, April 24 the team will play the rival Grand County Red Devils in Moab.
Then they head to Mt. Pleasent Friday and Saturday, April 25-26 for the Central Utah Invitational at North Sanpete High School.
According to Coach Olsen it should be a fun tournament with the team playing several matches, most of them against teams San Juan rarely faces.
The Region 15 Championship is set for next Tuesday, March 29 in Moab with the opening round of the 2025 state tournament coming up May 8 at Brighton High School in Cottonwood Heights.
