San Juan boys tennis team takes third in divisional championship

The San Juan High School boys tennis team got several strong performances at the South Divisional Championships in Moab on Tuesday, April 29.
The Broncos scored nine points to finish third behind divisional champion South Sevier and runner-up Gunnison Valley. Wasatch Academy was fourth and Grand County fifth in the competition.
Spencer Gosney finished second for the Broncos in third singles play, earning a semifinal win over Gunnison Valley’s Lucas Nelson in two sets, 6-4 and 7-5.
Gosney lost to South Sevier’s Carson Blackburn in the championship match in three hard-fought sets, 6-6 (7-5), 6-3, and 6-2.
San Juan took second place in the second doubles bracket also, with the duo of Boston Bowers and Hayden Cardall beating Gunnison Valley’s Hunter Goble and Ethan Romaine in the semifinals 6-1 and 6-1.
Bowers and Cardall lost to South Sevier’s Joel Cefalia and Skyler Willes in the championship match 6-1 and 6-1.
Wyatt Keith took third place for San Juan in second singles action, defeating Grand County’s Conner Prickett 6-4 and 6-2 in the third place match. Keith suffered a two-set loss to Gunnison Valley’s Oakley Christensen in the semifinals.
In first doubles play Alex Lyman and Peter Hoopes earned one point with a fourth-place finish. They suffered two-set losses in the semifinals and third-place match.
The Broncos are headed north for the 3A Utah State Tennis Championships this Thursday through Saturday, May 8-10. The first round will be played at Brighton High School in Cottonwood Heights on Thursday.
For San Juan #23 Noah Olsen will take on Richfield’s #10 Hunter Moore in first singles play. In second singles #21 Wyatt Keith faces Carbon’s #12 Memphis Howell.
In third singles #16 Spencer Gosney will go against Gunnison Valley’s #17 Lucas Nelson. In first doubles #21 Peter Hoopes and Alex Lyman will battle South Sevier’s #12 Lincoln Hansen and Eli Dopp.
And in the second doubles matchup it’s #19 Boston Bowers and Hayden Cardall taking on Delta’s #14 Kyson Huntsman and Joel Perez.
With a win in their first matches of the single-elimination tournament, players would advance to the Round of 16 as the tournament moves to Liberty Park in Salt Lake City starting on Friday.
