The San Juan High School cross country team opened their season with a bang on Saturday, August 20 and for the third year in a row the boys brought home a first-place finish at the Boggy Draw Bear Chase in Dolores, CO.
The first year the Bronco boys competed in this race (2020) they bested their competitors with a total of 42 team points. In 2021, the Broncos won with 32 points.
This year they cut those numbers practically in half and won with 17 points (just two points away from a perfect score).
The boys claimed all but one of the top six spots. Edward Lyman led the team with a win in the 5k course and a time of 19:16. Next was Abe Lyman who finished second in 19:53.
Toby Ward was third, only 20 seconds behind Lyman, with a time of 20:11. Logan Keith and Ryan McCullough were fifth and sixth with times of 20:21 and 20:23.
Freshman standout Noah Begay followed McCullough with an eighth-place finish in 20:52. Rounding out the top seven runners was Tayden Bitsoie in tenth with a time of 21:16.
With only four runners in attendance at Dolores, the girls were unable to score as a team, but they still represented San Juan High well.
Saylor Perkins, a senior and head girls captain, led the way with a 15th-place finish and a time of 28:15. Mere seconds behind with an outstanding performance was freshman Brinley Jones in 16th with a time of 28:27.
Rose Kartchner and Megan Black rounded out the Lady Broncos in 22nd and 27th with times of 32:15 and 42:33.
The Broncos will next travel to Monroe, UT for the South Sevier Invitational on Wednesday, August 31.
