San Juan girls basketball team runs record to 9-8 with six wins in past three weeks

The San Juan High School girls basketball team opened the season with three wins and five losses in December. They were ranked 13th in the official 2A standings at the Christmas break.
But in the first three weeks of the new year the Lady Broncos have heated up and are playing well. They are 6-3 so far in January with wins over Altamont, Bryce Valley, Grand County, South Sevier, Whitehorse, and Parowan.
Their three losses in January have come against the top three teams in the 2A standings – Enterprise, Beaver, and Kanab. All of those losses were also on the road.
San Juan was up to eighth in the standings as they headed into this week with only four games left in the regular season.
They began the week at home on Tuesday, January 27 with a local matchup against Monument Valley. This Friday and Saturday, January 30 and 31 they will rematch two of those top-three-ranked teams.
They host #3 Enterprise at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and #2 Beaver at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. Both games will be broadcast live on Redrock 92 Radio with video on StreamUtah.Live.
This past weekend the Lady Broncos split games on a long road trip, defeating Parowan 57-17 for their fourth win in a row on Friday, January 23 and suffering a 76-38 loss to #1 Kanab on Saturday, January 24.
Heading into the final two weeks of the regular season San Juan is led offensively by Khimya Fullwood, who continues to score at a nearly 17-point-per-game clip. She has 267 total points with six three-point baskets.
Kaidence Mitchell has 146 total points on the season for an average of 9.13 per game and four threes.
Brooklyn Lameman leads the team in three-pointers with 26. She has 121 points, an average of 7.56 per game.
Ella Stearns, who was unable to make the trip to Parowan and Kanab with the team, is fourth in scoring with 78 points and seven threes.
Daveigh Mitchell and Syndel Atcitty round out the top five with 58 points each. Mitchell has nine three-pointers.
Madi Adams has scored 39 points for the Lady Broncos this season with six three-point buckets. Evony Sampson has 26 points, Taverie Johnson has 13, and Jordan Jones 12.
Jayden Benally and Ava Bayles both have nine points apiece, Harmony Oshley and Ellie Beck have scored two each, and Lavanna Benn has one point.
San Juan Head Coach Laura Stearns says she likes how the team is playing right now. “It’s fun to see them coming together as a team right when we need to see them coming together as a team,” she stated.
Stearns said the girls are some of the best she’s coached as far as basketball fundamentals are concerned and it’s a group she can trust with the ball and who can play at a higher level.
