San Juan girls tennis concludes regular season, heads to regions
The San Juan High School girls tennis team concluded their 2020 regular season with a Region 12 double match versus Wasatch Academy and Gunnison Valley in Blanding Tuesday, September 15.
First-year head coach Ciarra Walker said the ten members of the team are “high-energy players who enjoy playing the game.”
She explained, “Although we haven’t won any matches as a team, many of the games between individual players have been close and the girls work hard during every match.”
Walker said some of the goals the team has pursued this year include having fun, enjoying the game, and improving their skills from match to match.
Most recently the players have been working to improve their doubles game by becoming confident net players. They have also been honing their serving skills to develop an edge against opponents.
“A lot of our girls who play tennis are often just beginning and learning the basics of the game,” stated Walker. “My main goal as a coach is to help the team be confident players, learn the game well, and find ways to improve themselves every day.
“Most of all, I want them to have fun,” she said. “Students and teens are under so much pressure these days and tennis is meant to be fun. It’s a wonderful opportunity to be a part of a team and create friendships.”
The 2020 San Juan girls varsity tennis team includes seniors BrinLi Bowring, Makaeli Begaye, and Irie Shumway; junior Sonja John; and sophomores Julie McFarland, Adia Eberling, and Kamora Mitchell.
In addition, Abby Decker, Shauna McNiven, and Shaylee McNiven played at the junior varsity level for the Lady Broncos this season.
The varsity players head to South Sevier High School in Monroe for the Region 12 Championship on Friday, September 25.
