San Juan girls tennis team closes regular season, begins state tournament this week

The San Juan High School girls tennis team played their final regular season match of the season at Wasatch Academy in Mt. Pleasant, UT on Tuesday, September 12.
Emily Pugh and Markie Bowers defeated their opponents in second doubles play, but the Lady Broncos suffered losses in first, second, and third singles play and first doubles play to drop the match 4-1.
Heading into the 2A Region 15 Tournament this past Friday, September 22 in Monroe San Juan was 1-4 on the year. The girls finished fifth as a team at the event.
In first doubles play the duo of Shayli Bake and Amelia McFarland got wins against Millard and Wasatch Academy in rounds one and two but suffered a loss to South Sevier in the finals.
In second doubles Markie Bowers and Emily Pugh beat Grand County in round two but fell in the finals also to South Sevier.
Madelyn Pugh, Sidney Murdock, and Bailey Moulton all battled hard in their respective matches but fell to their opponents in singles play.
The first round of the 2023 2A Utah State Girls Tennis Tournament is set for this Saturday, September 30 in Mt. Pleasant. Tournament brackets will be revealed on Friday, September 29 at 10 a.m.
Lady Bronco Head Coach Ciarra Walker is confident that the majority of the team will qualify for the first round. Winners this weekend will advance to the final rounds of the tournament in Salt Lake City October 6-7.
