For the first time ever at San Juan High School the San Juan Broncos hosted a girls wrestling dual this past Tuesday, December 17.
The Lady Broncos took on the Lady Mustangs of Monument Valley, AZ. The Lady Mustangs have more years and experience than San Juan, but that wasn’t a factor as the Lady Broncos were eager to show their home crowd they belong on the mat.
The night saw eight matches between the girls squads. Starting the night for San Juan was Inez Tsosie. In only her second match of the season she was defeated by a tough Monument Valley wrestler by fall.
Next to take the mat for the Lady Broncos was Saraeya Mills who got the first home dual win and her name in the history books as she beat her opponent by fall in 48 seconds.
Lucelia Benally fought hard but lost by fall in her first home match. Morgan Kaytso received a forfeit for the Broncos in her match.
The next matchup saw lyric Williams in her debut at home win by fall with eight seconds left in the first period. Kheirra Kieth also was able to get the win over her opponents as she fought hard through an exciting first period.
Early in the second period, she was able to secure the win by fall. Hannah Todachinnie rounded out the final scoring match of the dual, fighting hard in only her second event of the season, losing by fall.
In an exhibition matchup Saylor Dandy gave a great effort in front of the home fans, but unfortunately lost by fall in the second period.
The Lady Broncos secured their first-ever home win beating the Lady Mustangs 24 to 18. When asked about the girls season Head Coach Art Adair replied “The girls are coming along. They work hard in practice. They’re very coachable and they have a desire to win.
“They are setting the foundation for a very successful program in the future. We originally started with ten girls and as of this past week, we have added four more. We’re excited as coaches to see the growth of the program and each girl individually.
“I have to give a lot of credit to assistant coach Keshia Yellow as well.” The Lady Broncos’ next scheduled match is The Tournament of Champions in Vernal, UT January 10-11 but coaches are attempting to find another event before then to get the girls some more mat time.
