San Juan track and field team hosts lively SJC Championship

The San Juan High School track and field team hosted the annual San Juan County Championship on Saturday, March 23 with seven teams in attendance.
The Bronco boys scored 221 points to win their division. Carbon was a close second with 217 points, Monticello took third with 92 points, and Whitehorse was fourth with 13 points.
Monument Valley, Green River, and Pinnacle Academy all scored four points apiece to tie for fifth place among the boys teams.
In the girls competition Carbon dominated with 344 points. San Juan was a distant second with 99, Monticello was third with 68, and Green River took fourth with 28.
Whitehorse came home fifth with eight points, Pinnacle was sixth with five points, and Monument Valley did not register any points.
Carbon won the overall championship with an impressive 561 points, San Juan took second with 320 points, and Monticello finished third with 160 points.
Green River collected 32 combined points to take fourth, Whitehorse was fifth with 21 points, Pinnacle finished sixth with nine points, and Monument Valley got seventh with four points.
In the girls 100-meter dash San Juan’s Addison Helquist was the only athlete representing San Juan County to score points. She finished sixth in 14.38 to score three points.
Five Broncos finished in the top seven in the boys 100 meter. Brody Bilbao won the event with a time of 11.69. Zack Conway was second in 11.99. Brigham Nielson took third with a 12.06.
Josiah LaPalmer was fifth with a 12.32 and Miken Keith finished seventh in 12.4. Monticello’s Tavon Black came home fourth with a time of 12.11.
In the girls 100-meter hurdles Monticello’s Maron Freestone took fourth with a time of 20.25 while teammate Millie Petersen finished in the points with an eighth-place result in 21.92.
San Juan’s Adison Ivins was fifth in 20.76 and Chloe Palmer took seventh with her time of 21.37. In the boys 110-meter hurdles Monticello’s Seth Taylor was the only local athlete to score. He finished third with a solid 20.11.
In the girls 200-meter dash Reaghan Laws took fifth place and Keezie Flannery finished eighth for San Juan with times of 29.29 and 30.86 respectively.
Zack Conway and Brody Bilbao swept the top two places in the boys 200 meter for San Juan with times of 24.49 and 24.8 respectively.
Lynnox Benn was fifth, Miken Keith took sixth, and Josiah LaPalmer was eighth. Tavon Black had a nice finish for Monticello in third place with a time of 25.38.
Sadie Palmer was second in the girls 300-meter hurdles for San Juan with a time of 58.7 and Brittany Jensen took fifth in 1:05.73.
Fellow Bronco Brigham Nielson won the boys 300 hurdles in 43.08 and Andrew Nielson was fourth with a 48.19. Aaron Peterson came home fifth for Monticello with his time of 49.77.
In the girls 400 meter San Juan’s Reaghan Laws finished third in 1:06.46 while Monticello’s Makenna Peterson and Grace Coleman took fifth and eighth with times of 1:09.41 and 1:13.8 respectively.
Caleb Coleman took second in the boys 400 for Monticello with a time of 58.18. Whitehorse’s Ethan Begay was seventh in 1:02.91 and Buckaroo Ronnie Harris rounded out the points positions in eighth with a 1:04.0.
Lady Buckaroo Ayla Carling was fourth in the girls 800-meter run with a time of 2:58.01. San Juan’s Brinley Jones and Madilynn Adams took seventh and eighth with runs of 3:12.79 and 3:14.64.
In the boys 800 it was Edward Lyman leading the way. He cruised to the win with a time of 1:59.23. Teammates Logan Keith and Rosendo Martine were fourth and sixth respectively with times of 2:20.56 and 2:31.19. Whitehorse’s Ethan Begay took fifth with his time of 2:26.8.
Ayla Carling was the runner-up in the girls 1600 for Monticello, crossing the line in 6:16.65 while Sincere Nez and Ada Lyman got fifth and eighth for San Juan with times of 6:42.23 and 7:29.92.
Bronco Abram Lyman led the way among local athletes in the boys 1600 with a second-place finish in 5:12.15. Rosendo Martine was fourth in 5:27.3 for San Juan, Jesse Pettit took fifth for Monticello, and Josiah Gipe was seventh for Monument Valley.
In the girls 3200-meter run Monticello’s Marah Long and Ayla Carling finished fourth and fifth in 13:27.7 and 13:40.13. Sincere Nez and Brinley Jones came home seventh and eighth for San Juan in 14:04.3 and 15:29.01.
Edward Lyman and Abram Lyman swept the top two spots in the boys 3200 for the Broncos with Rosendo Martine taking fourth. Their times were 11:20.74, 11:34.61, and 12:09.45 respectively.
Aaron Gillette and Kaden Pehrson rounded out the final points positions in seventh and eighth for Monticello with times of 12:28.9 and 13:12.71.
The Whitehorse relay team of Shunbaah Begay, Rayauna Lee, Malia Sam, and RueShandin Jim took second in the girls 4x100 relay with a 1:09.14, scoring eight points.
San Juan’s Brigham Nielson, Josiah LaPalmer, Zack Conway, and Lynnox Benn won the boys 4x100 with a time of 45.59. The team of Lynnox Benn, Abram Lyman, Edward Lyman, and Brigham Nielson finished just three seconds behind Carbon to take second in the 4x400.
Monticello won the girls sprint medley relay with Maron Freestone, Millie Petersen, Lilli Burton, and Marah Long registering a time of 5:04.69.
The San Juan team of Sierra Black, Brittany Jensen, Jadyn Neztsosie, and Sincere Nez came in second with a 5:44-86.
The Monticello boys also dominated the sprint medley with the team of Jesse Pettit, Ronnie Harris, Tavon Black, and Caleb Coleman coming across the line in 4:22.25.
The Whitehorse team of Adam Joe, Phoenix Chee, Riley Benallie, and Ethan Begay was second with a time of 4:35.74.
San Juan County athletes dominated the girls discus event. San Juan’s Savannah Richmond was the overall champion with a throw of 99 feet, 1.5 inches. Madi Adair was third for Monticello with a 78-8.75.
Lady Bronco Hayden Shumway threw a 70-11.75 for fifth place. Teammate Bostyn Black finished sixth with a 69-9.25. Monticello’s Kyleigh Adair and Hailey Murdock were seventh and eighth with throws of 68-10.0 and 65-9.5.
In the boys discus it was Monticello sweeping the top three places with Nial Reay, Zac Thayn, and Ryan Lewis throwing 140-8.75, 102-5.25, and 96-11.5 respectively.
Broncos Logan Keith and Stetson Black were sixth and seventh with very close throws of 92-8.5 and 92-6.5.
Lady Buckaroo Kyleigh Adair took second in the girls shot put with a 28-11.0 while San Juan placed four athletes in the top eight.
Savannah Richmond, Bostyn Black, Sierra Richmond, and Hayden Shumway were third, fifth, sixth, and eighth with puts of 28-7.0, 25-5.0, 25-2.0, and 24 feet respectively.
Jared Burke won the boys shot put for San Juan with his effort of 40 feet, 4.5 inches. Monticello’s Nial Reay was second with a 36-2.5.
Buckaroo Mason Atwood was fourth, Bronco Ryan Shumway took sixth, and Whitehorse Raider Lucas Collins took the final point in eighth with puts of 31-9.0, 31-6.0, and 30-3.0 respectively.
In the girls javelin Sierra Richmond had a nice throw of 78 feet, nine inches to finish fifth. Coral Delorenzis and Madi Adair took sixth and eighth for Monticello with distances of 74-2.5 and 72 feet.
San Juan placed no less than five athletes in the top eight in the boys javelin. Tripp Palmer won the event with his throw of 134 feet, seven inches. Jared Burke was fourth with a 114-9.75.
Stetson Black, Miken Keith, and Keaton Ivins were fifth, sixth, and eighth respectively with throws of 110-7.75, 108-4.0, and 106-11.0.
Bronco Keaton Ivins won the boys long jump with a jump of 20 feet, 1.5 inches. Teammates Miken Keith, Tripp Palmer, and George McNaughtan were third, fifth, and sixth with jumps of 18-10.5, 18-3.75, and 17-11.5.
Keezie Flannery won the girls high jump with a four foot, 11 inch jump while teammate Madilynn Adams took sixth with a 4-5.0. Monticello’s Maron Freestone earned fifth place with her jump of 4-5.0.
And in the boys high jump it was Tripp Palmer at the top of the standings after he cleared five feet, ten inches. George McNaughtan took fifth with a 5-4.0 for the Broncos.
Three of the teams representing the county are in action this weekend. San Juan will compete in the Juab Invitational on Friday, March 29.
Monticello is at the Strata Invitational in Roosevelt on Saturday, March 30 while Monument Valley will be at the Farmington Invitational in Farmington, NM.
