SJR to host golf tourney

A golf tournament to honor the pioneers of golf in San Juan County will be held during Labor Day weekend at the Hideout Golf Club in Monticello.
The Founders Tournament is sponsored by the San Juan Record and Redrock92. Play will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 2 with a traditional 4-Man scramble format. There will be awards and raffles, and lunch will be served afterwards.
After World War II, a group of veterans embraced golf and envisioned a beautiful little course at the base of the Blue Mountains.
Fast forward 65 years and the Hideout is renowned as one of the top municipal golf courses in the United States.
In fact, in 2022 the Hideout was listed by Golfweek magazine as the top golf course in the State of Utah and as 36th best public course in the United States.
“The story of golf in San Juan County is a story of remarkable volunteer service,” said San Juan Record publisher Bill Boyle. “There simply wouldn’t have been a course built in that beautiful valley without the invaluable work and support of hundreds of people.”
The tournament is meant to honor that effort. Organizers extend a welcome to every family involved in the effort over the years, whether it is the first golfers or the latest supporters of the Hideout.
All proceeds of the tournament will be donated to the Hideout.
A website will be introduced in the future that will include the history of golf in the area and honor those whose work contributed to the course over the years.
