South county wrestling teams compete in Moab

The San Juan, Whitehorse, and Monument Valley wrestling teams all competed at the Red Rocks Invitational in Moab on December 3 and 4.

As a team, San Juan finished third behind Durango and Mancos. Whitehorse finished 12th and Monument Valley finished 13th.

Taking home first place at the round-robin tournament was Chance Hoggard of San Juan. Hoggard finished 7-1 on the weekend with seven wins coming by fall. Hoggard’s lone loss was a 4-1 decision to Grand County’s Beachem Bosh.

Despite the one loss at the tournament, Hoggard was able to secure first place in part thanks to help from teammate Taylor Black. Black finished third at the tournament going 7-2 on the weekend with five wins coming by pin. 

Black’s 6-5 decision win over Bosh helped Hoggard stand atop the podium at the end of the day.

Finishing between the two Bronco wrestlers was Whitehorse Raider Marcus Denny. Denny went 7-1 on the weekend with four wins coming by fall.

Joining Denny with silver medals were Bronco wrestlers Nicholas Joe and Parker Snyder. Joe went 6-1 with four pins, while Snyder went 5-2 with all five wins coming by pin.

Finishing third was Black, Chad Yellow, Taren Bayles, and Logan Keith for the Broncos.

Yellow went 5-2 on the weekend with four wins by pin, Bayles was 4-2 with two wins by pin and one by technical fall, while Keith went 6-2 with four wins by pin.

Lynnox Benn, Trace Bennett, and Tyler Bayles all finished fourth for the Broncos with all of their wins coming by fall or technical fall.

Deklan Helquist, JD Palmer, and Tayden Mark all finished fifth on the weekend for San Juan, while Joshua Nelson placed sixth for Monument Valley.

Treshon Billie finished seventh for the Broncos while Lucas Collins finished seventh for the Raiders. And Shayden Fatt placed eighth for the Cougars.

Placing ninth was Shandon Fatt for Monument Valley as well as Landin Clark and Amos Nocki for Whitehorse, with Deion Singer finishing tenth for the Cougars.
