Each year the Deseret News awards an annual All-Sports Award to High Schools in the six Utah classifications.
The award is meant to reflect the top overall athletic program in each classification, with schools earning points for finishing in the top eight in state competitions.
San Juan County schools are faring well through one-third of the year.
Ten points are awarded for first place and eight for second, then six points down to one for third through eighth places. Points are divided when teams tie.
Points are earned in football, cross country, golf, basketball, wrestling, baseball, track, soccer, tennis, volleyball, softball, swimming, and lacrosse.
In the 2A ranks San Juan High is in second place earning 27 points in the fall just behind North Summit’s 28.5 points.
The Broncos boys earned the most points among 2A teams with a state championship in football and a runner-up trophy in cross country for 18 points.
San Juan girls are sixth among 2A teams with the girls nine points, earning a third place finish in volleyball and a sixth place finish in cross country.
In 1A ranks Monticello is seventh overall earning 13.5 points.
The Buckaroo boys team is fourth overall with 11.5 points led by a third place finish in cross country and a semi-final appearance in football.
The Monticello girls are 10th with a 7th place finish in volleyball.
The Whitehorse Raiders are 10th in the 1A. The boys are 8th overall led by a semi-final appearance in football while the girls are 10th with a 7th place finish in cross country.
Monument Valley also has a point with an eight place finish in girls volleyball.
Plenty of athletic events remain for the rest of the season for schools to earn points for the All-Sport award
