Three Broncos win matches at boys tennis region championship

Marty Clinger, Conner Montella, and Denim Howell led the San Juan High School boys tennis team with match victories at the Region 12 Championship Thursday, April 27 in Richfield.
Clinger defeated Koda Corona of Gunnison Valley in the first round of third singles play 6-2 and 6-3. He suffered a loss to South Sevier’s Jackson Johnston in the second round and finished third for the Broncos.
Montella lost to South Sevier’s Damon Bergfeld in the first round of his first singles bracket but beat Cameron Jones of Carbon High School in round two 6-4 and 7-6 (7-5).
And Howell fell to Will Jackson of Gunnison Valley in the first round of second singles play but defeated Dresdin Miller of Carbon 7-6 (7-3) and 6-2 in the second round.
With the three match wins the Broncos scored six points to finish sixth at the tournament, besting Carbon by two points.
Other San Juan players competing in Richfield included Spencer Gosney, Noah Olsen, Spencer Adams, and Peter Hoops.
San Juan Head Coach Casey Olsen said all the boys played hard and enjoyed themselves in the event. The first round of the 2A state tournament is this Saturday, May 6 in Richfield.
Olsen reports that every player will get to play in the first round following rule changes by the Utah High School Activities Association that began this season.
Winners advance to the remaining rounds of the tournament, to be played May 12-13 at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City.
