Three Monument Valley wrestlers earn divisional titles with eyes on state tournament.

The Monument Valley girls wrestling team finished 3rd and qualified six wrestlers for the 1A/2A state tournament at the Division A tournament on January 31 in Duchesne, Utah.
Leading the way for the Cougars were sisters Aiyana and Priseis Parker who both won divisional titles.
In her lone match at the 155 lb division Priseis Parker built a 7-1 lead after one period in the finals, Priseis extended that lead with an escape and takedown in the second period before earning the win by pin to wrap up the divisional title.
In the 170 lb division older sister Aiyana Parker cruised through her bracket. Aiyana pinned her opponent in the quarterfinals and semifinals. In the final match Aiyana took down her opponent and earned nearfall but the match was stopped due to injury with her opponent defaulting out of the match for the Parker sisters to sweep top honors.
Also wrestling in the divisional finals was teammate Keturah Whitehorse. Whitehorse earned a first period fall in the quarterfinals before wrestling in a back and forth semi-final match before pulling out the pin in the third period. In the finals Whitehorse was defeated by pin.
Finishing 4th for Monument Valley was Nay’myia Morgan. Morgan went 2-2 at the tournament earning both wins by fall. Zaria Holliday and Summer Atene both finished 5th and qualified for the state tournament.
The Monument Valley boys wrestling team finished 7th and qualified four wrestlers for the 1A state tournament at the 1A Division B tournament on January 30 in Panguitch, Utah.
Leading the way for the cougars was Jace Tsosie who earned a divisional championship at 165 lbs. Tsosie earned a win by pin over teammate Derwin Hulligan in the semi-finals before wrestling against an opponent from Wayne in the finals. Tsosie dominated the championship match going up 3-1 after the first period and extending his lead 10-3 after two periods before earning the win by pin in the final seconds of the match.
Also placing at 165 lbs was Hulligan who earned 4th place going 0-2 at the tournament.
Jimcinto Freddy also finished in 4th place for the Cougars. Freddy earned a first period pin in the quarterfinals before losing by pin in the semi-finals. Freddy bounced back with a win by pin in the consolation semi-finals before losing by pin in the 3rd place match.
Kye Amy also finished 4th.. Amy lost his semi-final match by fall before bouncing back with a first-period pin in the consolation semifinals, and then was defeated in the third place match. Also wrestling hard for the Cougars was Jerious Clark.
The 1A/2A girls state tournament and the 1A boys tournament are both set for February 14 at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield.
