The San Juan and Monticello volleyball teams traveled to St. George August 26 and 27 to take on some tough competition at the annual Dixie Fly High Tournament.
The Broncos opened the tourney Friday with back-to-back losses to Hurricane and Murray in pool play, but went 3-1 from that point to win their bracket and come home with a 4-3 record on the season.
San Juan scored a win over American Leadership Academy (ALA) in the final game of pool play, then suffered a loss to Emery in a crossover game Saturday morning to enter the Copper Bracket for the closing games of the tourney.
In the semifinals against familiar foe Monticello, the Broncos were down two sets to one but rallied to win 3-2 and advance to the championship game of the bracket.
Once again they faced ALA and once again they dominated the Eagles, winning set one 25-17 and set two 25-7. The Eagles won set three 26-24, but San Juan closed them out with a 25-12 win in the fourth to take the Copper Bracket championship.
The trip was a bit of a challenge for Monticello. The Buckaroos fell to Carbon, Kanab, and Panguitch in pool play Friday, then suffered losses to Hillcrest and San Juan in crossover and bracket play Saturday.
Prior to the Dixie Fly High Tournament, MHS picked up a strong 3-2 win over Grand County on Tuesday, August 23 in Moab to run their season-opening record to 2-0. Following the trip to St. George the Bucks are 2-5 on the year.
San Juan and Monticello got a chance to rematch that exciting game they played this past weekend when they met each other again on Tuesday, August 30 in Blanding.
The Broncos will close a busy week at home versus Parowan this Thursday, September 1 then on the road at South Sevier on Friday. For the Buckaroos, Green River will pay a visit to the MHS gym on Thursday.
