Whitehorse boys beat Escalante in rematch

The #12 seed Whitehorse Raiders opened the state tournament on February 28 playing against the #5 seed Wendover Wildcats. The Raiders battled, but lost 80-56 to the Wildcats.
Whitehorse was led by Lyric Phillips, who finished the game with 26 points, Dominic Dance scored eight, Kalin Tohonnie had seven points and Adam Joe scored six, with Larenz Tsosie scoring four.
Elam Etsitty scored three and Kaleb Joe had two points in the game. Kaleb Joe also pulled down nine rebounds, while Etsitty and Phillips had three assists, Dance and Kaleb Joe each had two steals and Tristan Black and Etsitty both recorded blocks in the game.
On February 29, the Raiders faced #13 seed Escalante for the second time in a month. In a matchup on February 2, the Raiders were beat on the road by Escalante.
In the rematch, the Raiders built a 22-18 lead at halftime and extended the lead to 37-30 after three quarters. Escalante went on a furious comeback to cut the Whitehorse lead to one point.
With just a few seconds remaining, Phillips stole the ball from Escalante and dribbled out the clock to earn the one-point victory.
The Raiders were led in scoring by Phillips, who had 22 points in the game including 16 in the second half. Larenz Tsosie scored 12 points in the win, with Dance scoring six, Tohonnie adding four and Adam Joe scoring two.
The Raiders got another close game against a familiar foe on March 1, with a match-up against Region 19 champion Green River. The Raiders held a two-point lead at halftime on the back of six made three-pointers by Phillips.
The second half saw the Pirates come storming back taking a five-point lead after three quarters before closing out the game with a two-point victory.
The Raiders were led in scoring by Phillips, who scored 26 points in the game. Tsosie added nine, Dance scored eight, and Kaleb Joe, Adam Joe, and Tohonnie each scored two points in the game.
The Raiders will bid a fond farewell to two seniors, Lyric Phillips and Larenz Tsosie. Phillips scored over 1,000 points in his career along with breaking the state record for three-pointers made in a game (14) at senior night against Shiprock Northwest.
