Whitehorse girls basketball on to state quarterfinals
The Whitehorse Lady Raiders basketball team is on to the 1A Utah State Tournament.
The #6 seed Whitehorse made it to the quarterfinals being held at Salt Lake Community College this year and face the #3 seed Tabiona Tigers on Thursday.
The Whitehorse girls earned a first round bye in the state tournament and a home match-up in the second round against #11 Milford with the game in Montezuma Creek.
The Raiders built a 20-15 lead after one quarter and pushed their lead 37-20 at halftime. Milford narrowed the gap a bit after three quarters with Whitehorse leading 45-31 and put the game away in the fourth to earn a 53-48 win.
Whitehorse was led in the game by Keira Chee who scored 20 points, while Keiarra Martin scored 18 and Hannah Clark had 12. Kaleigh Chee scored five while Lakyara Begay had four, Maria Yellowman scored three and Malia Sam scored one.
Keira Chee almost had a double-double leading the team with nine rebounds while Martin and Clark each had eight rebounds.
Clark led the team with seven assists while Martin had five. Clark also had six steals while Martin had three and Martin also had a block in the game.
The Raiders enter the tournament with an 18-5 record on the season and will face the Tabiona Tigers with a 21-2 record. The state quarterfinal game will tipoff at 4:00 pm on February 26. Red Rock 92.7 FM will be at SLCC in Taylorsville, Utah to broadcast the game, and the entire state tournament run for the Lady Raiders.
The Whitehorse Raiders boys basketball season came to a conclusion last week.
The Raiders earned the #13 seed in the 1A state basketball tournament and opened that round against the #20 seed Mount Vernon Patriots at home on February 17.
The Whitehorse boys jumped to a 27-8 lead after one quarter and led 42-24 at halftime. Whitehorse led 56-38 after three quarters with the final score favoring the Raiders 76-56.
The Raiders were led in the game by Hyatt Thomas who scored 24 points while Adam Joe scored 18 and Tristan Black scored 13. Elam Etsitty scored seven, while Aiden Hamm had five. Alexander Thompson scored three while Lysyle Phillips, Asa Hot and Caiden Lansing all scored two.
Following the win the Raiders went on the road to play at the #4 seed Manila Mustangs on February 21. Whitehorse fell to the Mustangs 84-56.
In that game the Raiders were led by Joe who scored 17 points, Hamm scored 13 and Thomas had 12. Etsitty scored six, while Black had four, Thompson and Dillon Leo each had two points in the game.
Whitehorse finished the season with a 10-15 record going 3-5 in region play to finish 3rd in Region 19.
Whitehorse was led on the season by Joe who finished averaging 13.9 points per game, while Thomas averaged 13.4 and Etsitty averaged 7.5 for the Raiders.
Whitehorse fans will say so long to seniors Elam Etsitty, Tristan Black, Aiden Hamm, Alexander Thompson, Brayden John, Jayden John, and Nateo Sam.
