Sterling scholars named March 5

Carbon High School will host the annual Southeastern Utah Sterling Scholar competition on March 5. A total of 26 San Juan County seniors will vie for the coveted title of Sterling Scholar against 65 seniors from Carbon, Emery and Grand counties. The awards program begins at 5 p.m. at the College of Eastern Utah in Price. The public is invited to attend. Photographs of local students will be printed in the March 5 San Juan Record.

The Southeastern Utah Sterling Scholars is presented in cooperation with district officials and high school administrators as well as colleges and universities who offer scholarships. It will be judged by faculty from the College of Eastern Utah, Southern Utah University, and Utah Valley State College.

The program recognizes high school seniors for scholastic excellence in 12 categories: English; Speech/Drama; Mathematics; Social Science; Science; Foreign Language; Visual Arts; Technology and Trades; Family and Consumer Sciences; Business and Marketing; Music; and General Scholarship.

Students from Monument Valley, Whitehorse, San Juan, Monticello, Grand County, Green River, Emery, and Carbon high schools participate in the annual competition. Similar contests are held in other areas of the state.

Nominees are judged on scholarship, leadership, citizenship, and character. Each nominee prepares a portfolio outlining his or her scholastic and extracurricular accomplishments and is interviewed by judges in their categories.

A winner and two runners-up are selected in each category. Winners receive $400 and runners-up $100. Other institutions of higher learning also offer scholarships to winners and runners-up.
