Two win title of Sterling Scholar

Two local students brought home top honors and ten received runner-up honors at the annual Sterling Scholars competition on March 18 in Price.
Arianna Reay of Monticello High and Brittney Macdonald of San Juan High are local winners in the competition between students from nine high schools in southeast Utah.
Students compete for top honors in 12 categories, with a winner and two runners-up for each.
Brittney Macdonald is the winner in the foreign language category. A scholar and a leader, Macdonald has studied a Foreign Language for three years and has consumed herself in the culture.
With a 3.9 GPA, she is an outstanding student with commitment and determination in all subjects. Macdonald is president of the French Club and Student Body Secretary.
Along with academics, she participates in tennis and softball.  She has enrolled in college classes and will graduate with an associate’s degree in April. She is the daughter of Paul and Lisa Macdonald.
Arianna Reay is the winner in the mathematics category. Reay scored a 35 on the math section of the ACT test, with a 34 composite score. She is the class valedictorian and has a 4.0 GPA.
Arianna has gone above and beyond her regular math classes to take online and college classes. She spent her high school years tutoring other students in math.
Reay was the junior class president and studentbody vice president.
She excels in track, with six individual state championships and one state record in the long jump. Reay is a member of the National Honor Society and even teaches tumbling to small children. She is the daughter of Paul and Isabel Reay.
Runners-up from Monticello High School are Aapree Sheeran in music, Sheldon Lewis in trade and technology, and Makala Lieataua in language.
Runners-up from San Juan High School include Emily Royer in english, Tyrel Pemberton in business and marketing, Koy Nielson in speech, drama, Kira Simpson in math, Micah Daniels in science, and Michael Blake in music.
Nolten Bowsley, of Monument Valley High, is runner up in family and consumer science.
Winners of the competition are eligible for a number of scholarships.
