Louis John Schlichting

Louis John Schlichting passed awy on October 13, 2014, in Cortez, CO. He was born on June 1, 1940 at Long Creek, OR, to Fred and Opal Lorain Schlichting. He spent his early childhood at Long Creek with his family which included six siblings.
Louie received his formal education in the schools at Prineville, OR, including attending a church school.
In 1958, Louie completed his schooling and joined the Navy. He served on the aircraft carrier USS Hancock. He loved the Navy and reminisced about his time spent serving the country.
After the Navy, Louie moved to San Juan County and worked at the Recapture sawmill. He married Judy (Randolph) in 1964. They spent 30 years together, living life to the fullest, while enjoying family and friends.
Louie worked in Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Utah and Colorado. He was a lumberjack, worked in several sawmills, and a worked in many mines.
He received many awards from Union Carbide for his skills and safety measures and displayed them proudly on his Carbide hat. He was well respected as a fellow worker and as a foreman.
Louie was a Veteran and member of the Lions Club. Service was important to him. Louie never had any children, but was “Uncle Lou” to nephews and nieces.
After Judy died in 1995, he married Pauline Hedgecock of Cortez. Pauline had two sons by marriage, Steve and Terry.
Louie loved the outdoors, to fish, hunt and camp. He enjoyed working with his hands and especially liked working with wood. Once retired, he built many wood items, including clocks and scenic night lights.
Louie is preceded in death by his parents, siblings Ernest, Patricia and Raymond, and first wife Judy Schlichting.
He is survived by his wife Pauline Hedgecock of Cortez, CO., siblings Rosemary Hertz (Johnnie) of Yuma, AZ; Willard Schlichting (Bonnie) and Evelyn Plummer of Prineville, OR, and many nephews and nieces, as well as brothers- and sisters-in-laws from both of his wives’ families.
Louie was given a veterans salute for his service in the U.S. Navy during a graveside service held on October 13, 2014 at the Monticello City Cemetery.
